Last Patrol volunteers conducted our Honor Ceremony for Richard Underwood, an Army Veteran in hospice care with @VIA HealthCare.

Richard was born in Michigan in 1933. He graduated from Michigan University and was commissioned an Army Officer in 1955, and after training was assigned to Germany.

After the military, he initially worked for General Motors – where he met his wife, Sandra, of 60 years. Richard went on the received a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1970. The family moved to Clemson, SC, where he became an Assistant Professor of English for @Clemson University. “He’s also an excellent Jazz pianist and a novel writer.”

Richard and Sandra had one son (who sadly passed away early). Sandra also worked for @Clemson University. After retirement they travelled extensively. Unfortunately, Sandra passed away earlier this year, so Richard is now alone.

Despite having lost his family, he remains part of the “military brotherhood,” and we wanted to support him as he proceeds on his Last Patrol. In our ceremony, we presented him several patriotic gifts.
